China's 'Artificial Sun' fusion reactor sets a world record..!
China's Artificial Sun |
For 20 seconds , China's 'artificial sun' EAST achieved a peak temperature of 288 million degrees Fahrenheit , which is over ten times hotter than the sun. What is EAST and how does it work ?
What is China’s ‘artificial sun’ EAST?
Fusion Reactor |
The ultimate goal of EAST is to create nuclear fusion like the Sun, using deuterium abound in the sea. Deuterium from one-litre of seawater can produce energy equivalent to 300 litres of gasoline through a nuclear fusion reaction.
HL-2M Tokamak, China’s largest and most advanced nuclear fusion experimental research device, was successfully powered up for the first time.
Here we need to know What is Nuclear Fusion ?
Nuclear fusion is a reaction in which two or more atomic nuclei are combined to form one or more different atomic nuclei and subatomic particles.
For nuclear fusion to occur, tremendous heat and pressure are applied to hydrogen atoms so that they fuse together. Unlike fission, nuclear fusion is considered a safer process with no nuclear waste. Nuclear fusion could potentially provide unlimited clean energy at very low costs.
For nuclear fusion to take place , extreme heat and pressure are applied to hydrogen atoms. Under these conditions, nuclei of deuterium and tritium – components of the hydrogen atom – fuse together to produce a helium nucleus , a neutron , and vast amounts of energy.
(above) The Sun is a main-sequence star, and thus generates its energy by nuclear fusion of hydrogen nuclei into helium. In its core, the Sun fuses 620 million metric tons of hydrogen each second. (below) The proton-proton chain dominates in stars the size of the Sun or smaller.
For 20 seconds , China's 'artificial sun' EAST achieved a peak temperature of 288 million degrees Fahrenheit , which is over ten times hotter than the sun.

How does the reactor reach such high temperatures?
This built fusion reactor has operated in different phases since 2006. Like many of the world’s tokamak experiments, EAST has reached fusion before. As a refresher, inside the donut-shaped (or, sometimes, more spherical) containment of a tokamak, sun-hot plasma swirls in a circle that’s held in place by supercooled electromagnets.
In a bid to push for clean energy and reach such high temperatures, hydrogen isotopes are placed inside a fusion device to create a plasma state where ions and electrons are separated. During the process, ions are heated and maintained at high temperatures. China's EAST reactor had previously reached 100 million degrees Celsius in 2018.
Bonus information about EAST :
Around 300 scientists and engineers mobilised to support the operation of the doughnut-shaped experiment facility, which includes a vacuum system, RF wave system, laser scattering system, and microwave system, Xinhua reported. Scientists had begun upgrading the experimental reactor for about a year to reach higher temperatures.
Global science project :
China’s EAST project is part of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) facility that will become the world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor after it becomes operational in 2035 , ITER which is a global science project jointly constructed by China , the EU, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the US. The next goal for the EAST project is to maintain the high temperature for a long period of time...
